What is a Cone Beam Scanner?

A cone beam scanner is a type of X-Ray imaging machine that is similar to a CT scanner. Using a cone shaped beam it is able to create an extensive range of images that can be used for diagnostic and treatment planning purposes. A cone beam scanner provides more thorough imaging than traditional dental X-rays, which is why it is used for specific diagnostic purposes as needed.

Benefits of a Cone Beam Scanner

The Carestream 3D Cone Beam scanner provides many benefits:

  • Uses less radiation than a traditional CT. A cone beam scanner can provide comparable quality images to what a traditional CT scanner does, but with significantly less radiation.
  • Provides a 360 degree view. The cone-shaped beam provides 360 degrees of images, offering views from all sides and angles. This allows for better diagnostic accuracy.
  • Images are 3D. The Carestream 3D Cone Beam scanner provides 3 dimensional images that are realistic and accurate.
  • Painless and non-invasive. The cone beam scanner is completely painless. The patient must only remain still while the beam passes over them.

Are You a Good Candidate for Cone Beam Scanning?

Cone beam scanning may be recommended for you if you have oral or dental health concerns that need to be thoroughly assessed. When regular X-rays are not enough to provide the necessary images needed to evaluate your condition, you may be a good candidate for cone beam scanning. Cone beam scanning may also be recommended if you are at a high risk for certain oral health conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cone Beam Scanners

A cone beam scanner is a type of X-Ray imaging machine that is similar to a CT scanner. A cone beam scanner provides more thorough imaging than traditional dental X-rays, which is why it is used for specific diagnostic purposes as needed.

Are cone beam scanners safe?

The Carestream 3D Cone Beam Scanner is a safe diagnostic tool for patients. It uses a low level of radiation to minimize exposure during the scan. Cone beam scanning should only be used when necessary for diagnosis and treatment. Repeat scanning increases exposure to radiation and should be avoided unless required.

Do I need any anesthesia for a cone beam scan?

No, you will not need any anesthesia because a cone beam scanner is non-invasive. You won’t feel any pain; in fact you won’t feel anything at all. All that is required is that you don’t move during the scan.

How long does a cone beam scan take?

The entire scan takes less than a minute. You will spend more time in the waiting room and being prepped for the scan than you will getting the actual scan done. The greatest amount of time is spent evaluating the images and communicating the results.

Will I be closed into a small space for a cone beam scan?

The machinery is very open. You sit upright and a robotic arm rotates around your head to create the images. It is nothing like the tunnel-like equipment you lay in for an MRI, so there’s no need to worry if you’re claustrophobic.
